The four letter F word

Yes, the one that nobody wants to talk about. To fast is defined as refraining from all food or drink, except water, for a certain period of time. There are many different methods of fasting, some of which can be quite challenging. In fact, whenever you hear the word fast, I’m guessing there may be a few other words that come to mind and fun is not one of them. However, there is one type of fasting that is easy to follow and can significantly benefit patients with Parkinson’s Disease, Autoimmune Disorders, weight challenges, and food intolerances. This is known as the “night fast” or 12-15 hour fast.

In my opinion this type of fasting is the easiest to follow, especially because you are asleep for half of it! Studies are starting to discover that fasting at night is critical for good health and that people who snack at night tend to have poor eating habits which put them at a higher risk for disease.

So what are some of the benefits of night fasting?

  • Helps the brain repair cells and promotes new brain and cell function
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Helps the body purify and reduce toxins
  • Helps to keep a clear mind
  • Boosts immune system
  • Lowers cancer risk, especially breast cancer
  • Boosts metabolism and increases weight loss
  • Protects the kidneys and helps the liver function
  • Maintains healthy skin

Now, what IS a night fast? It is actually quite simple – after dinner, drink only water (or lemon water) until the next morning when you have breakfast. The one catch is that you need to make sure you allow at least 12 to 13 hours between dinner and breakfast.  For example, have dinner at 6 PM and then limit yourself to water until breakfast the next morning between 7-9 AM. It is important to begin this process slowly. Start with 3 nights and then gradually work up to 5 nights per week. If you are struggling with this while your body is adjusting to the fast, you can sip on bone broth or have a fermented beverage like kefir water or coconut water kefir. Both of these drinks will also be an added benefit to your gut health. You can purchase kefir starter and coco-biotic through the Body Ecology link under the Favorites tab on my website https://www.nutritionalrestoration.com

Changes in your daily habits can be difficult, but the benefits are tremendous. If you would like to talk further on whether night fasting is the right thing for you, please don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation appointment.
