Amplitude Training- Why you should be thinking BIG!

Amplitude Training- Why you should be thinking BIG!

In recent years, the evidence to show the benefits of exercise with Parkinson’s has been growing rapidly. There have been many specific types of exercise that have been proven to improve function. I’m asked frequently about amplitude training. It seems a lot of people have heard of this type of training and know it’s good for Parkinson’s symptoms, but most don’t know exactly what it is.

Many people with PD describe issues that revolve around difficulty with performing daily tasks. They can’t get out of bed as easily as they used to, it takes multiple attempts and the need to use their hands to get out of a chair or they are shuffling when they walk. Although strength, ROM and balance may be an issue, many times performance can be improved with amplitude training.

When you have Parkinson’s, your brain is telling your body that the size, or amplitude, of movement needed to perform tasks like standing from a chair or getting out of bed is less than it needs to be. To explain this concept, I try to relate it to speed limits on the interstate.  Your brain believes the speed limit is 45 mph when everybody else is moving at 60 mph.  Because of this, it often takes multiple attempts to perform the intended movement and as a result, is more fatiguing. Now, if you were driving on a highway and consistently being passed you would get the hint and step on the gas to keep up with all the other cars. With amplitude training, the therapist or trainer you work with helps to be that guide and show you how BIG your movements actually need to be in order to complete those tasks that are most difficult.

Studies have shown that working on exercises focused on amplitude of movement can have benefit in people with Parkinson’s. This all leads to improved quality of life and independence with mobility.  Programs you may have heard of that focus on amplitude training are Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (www.pwr4life.org) and LSVT BIG (www.lsvtglobal.com) incorporate amplitude into their training regimen.  You can find a certified instructor in your area through their websites.

I use amplitude training and reinforce BIG movement with all my clients.  Not only can people improve their ability to perform daily tasks better and with less fatigue, but other areas including balance and speed of walking improve as well.

So get moving BIG!!!  You’re body will thank you.
